Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. Unlike bridges or dentures, implants integrate with your jawbone to provide a permanent, stable, and natural-feeling solution.
Are You a Candidate?
Most adults in good general health are candidates for implants. Key requirements include adequate jawbone density to support the implant, healthy gums free of periodontal disease, and a commitment to good oral hygiene. Smokers face higher failure rates and should discuss risks with their dentist.
The Procedure
The implant process typically takes 3–6 months. First, the titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Over the following months, osseointegration occurs — the bone grows around and fuses with the implant. Once fully integrated, a custom crown is attached.
Recovery
Mild discomfort and swelling for 3–5 days after placement is normal. Stick to soft foods, avoid smoking, and follow your dentist's post-operative instructions carefully. Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
Long-Term Care
Implants require the same care as natural teeth: brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups. With proper care, implants can last a lifetime. The crown may need replacement after 10–15 years due to normal wear.
