The whitening market is flooded with products — strips, gels, charcoal pastes, LED kits, whitening toothpastes — all promising dramatically brighter teeth. Some of them work. Most of them don't, or not the way the packaging implies.
Here's a clear-eyed guide from a dentist who has performed hundreds of professional whitening sessions — and who will tell you when a home product is fine and when it isn't.
Why teeth turn yellow or dark in the first place
Tooth discolouration has two sources, and this distinction matters enormously for treatment:
Extrinsic staining sits on the surface of enamel — caused by tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods. This is the type of staining that whitening works on.
Intrinsic discolouration is inside the tooth structure itself — caused by tetracycline antibiotics taken during development, fluorosis (excess fluoride), old restorations, or trauma. Intrinsic staining cannot be fixed with whitening agents. It requires veneers or crowns.
If you've tried whitening and seen no result, intrinsic staining may be why. A dentist can tell you which type you have in about two minutes.
What professional (in-clinic) whitening does
Professional whitening uses hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of 25–40% — far higher than anything available over the counter (which is limited to 6% in India). At White Oak, we apply this to your teeth, activate it with a specialised light, and monitor the process carefully across 2–3 cycles in a single session.
Result: most patients lighten 4–8 shades in a single 60–75 minute appointment.
What's included in your visit:
- Pre-treatment shade assessment (so you can see exactly how much you've improved)
- Gum protection application before whitening gel is placed
- 3 cycles of professional-grade whitening gel with light activation
- Sensitivity protection treatment at the end
- Post-whitening care kit and dietary guidance
- Written shade record for future reference
Professional whitening at White Oak starts from ₹2,999.
What over-the-counter products actually do
| Product | Active ingredient | Realistic result | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitening toothpaste | Mild abrasives | Removes surface stain only; 1–2 shades at most | Fine for maintenance |
| Whitening strips | Low-% peroxide (≤6%) | 2–3 shades over 2–3 weeks | Works, slowly |
| Charcoal paste | Activated charcoal (abrasive) | Minimal whitening; may scratch enamel | Not recommended |
| LED home kits | Low-% peroxide + light | 2–4 shades over several weeks | Works if used consistently |
| Professional in-clinic | 25–40% peroxide | 4–8 shades in one session | Most effective, fastest |
How long do results last?
Professional whitening results typically last 12–24 months with good oral hygiene and dietary habits. The main factors that shorten results:
- Daily tea or coffee consumption (the biggest factor in Ranchi, in my experience)
- Tobacco use (the most aggressive stainer)
- Red wine and certain curries
- Not brushing within 30 minutes of pigmented foods/drinks
Many patients come back for a maintenance touch-up once a year, which brings costs down significantly over time.
Is whitening safe?
Professional whitening is safe when performed or supervised by a dentist. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which typically resolves within 24–48 hours. We include a sensitivity protection treatment at the end of every session to minimise this.
Whitening is not appropriate if you have:
- Untreated cavities or active gum disease (these must be treated first)
- Intrinsic (internal) staining — whitening won't help and can cause uneven results
- Very thin or translucent enamel
- Pregnancy (we wait until after delivery as a precaution)
What about whitening with crowns or veneers?
Whitening agents do not change the colour of ceramic restorations. If you have crowns, veneers, or composite bonding, we need to discuss this before whitening — because your natural teeth will lighten but the restorations won't, which can create a mismatch.
The standard approach is to whiten your natural teeth first to your desired shade, then replace or update any restorations to match.
My honest recommendation for Ranchi patients
If you drink chai or coffee daily and want noticeably brighter teeth, professional whitening is worth it — you'll see a difference the same day. Strips are a reasonable option if you have the patience and don't need dramatic results quickly.
Charcoal toothpaste is the one product I'd actively advise against. The abrasive particles can erode enamel over time, and enamel does not regenerate. Don't trade a slightly whiter smile now for thinner, more sensitive teeth later.
